CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE 2001 SEWANEE MEDIEVAL COLLOQUIUM ON THE THEME
"CRUSADES AND CRUSADING IN THE MIDDLE AGES"

KEYNOTE LECTURERS: JONATHAN RILEY-SMITH, EMMANUEL COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE;
ROBERT CHAZAN, NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS: 1 October 2000 (for address, see
below)

The 28th annual Sewanee Medieval Colloquium will meet at the University
of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, on Friday and Saturday 6 and 7 April
2001.

In addition to two lectures by each of the keynote speakers, the program
will include 20-minute papers from any discipline; papers may be related
to the theme in any way. For instance, we would hope to include papers
on the crusade in literature, the historiography of the crusades,
Christians and non-Christians in the age of the crusades, Westerners and
Byzantines in the crusades, the art and architecture of the crusaders,
the Latin East, and the Muslim East. We would like also to have papers
on the northern crusades and the reconquest of Muslim Spain as well as
the more "mainstream" Eastern Crusades.

Those interested in participating in the Colloquium should submit two
copies of an abstract (approximately 250 words) and two copies of a
brief curriculum vitae by October 1, 2000. Papers accepted for the
Colloquium must be submitted in their final form, including critical
apparatus, by February 20, 2001, in order to reach their commentators in
good time.

Sewanee Mediaeval Colloquium Prize
The Sewanee Mediaeval Colloquium Prize wil be awarded for the best paper
presented by a graduate student or recent PhD recipient (doctorate
awarded since June 1998). The prize, worth $250, will be judged by the
Colloquium Committee and presented at a plenary session of the
Colloquium. Candidates for the prize should follow the normal procedure
of submitting abstracts by October 1 and completed papers by February
20. The completed paper should be accompanied by a letter stating that
the author wishes it to be considered for the prize.
