I do remember 1 rm schools, pot belly stoves and outhouses. I haven't heard anyone mention lard bucket for lunch buckets. I also walked a couple of miles to school everyday. I started school in the hills of Kentucky. We had no electricity, plumbing at school. My grandparents had electricity. That consisted of lite bulbs hanging on cloth wiring with a string hooked to th pull on off chain. When my parents moved us to Momterey peninsula in Ca I thought I had died and gone to heaven. We lived in a house with indoor plumbing, electric light switches on the walls. School was a BIG building with first through sixth grades, each class had only one grade to a classroom. There were real playground toys, no tire on a rope for a swing, painted hopscotches. I had never seen anything like it. You can bet it didn't take me any time to get used to all the conviences. My Mom even got a Maytag wringer washer instead of a wash tub and scrubboard. I thought the sweetshop across from the school was put there just for my pleasure. I remember bread 5cents a loaf. Even when my parents had their grocery store from mid 40s-mid 50s coke was a dime a bottle. Nickle candy bars and ice cream bars.Margarine started to come in colored cubes instead of blobs that looked just like lard with a packet of orange coloring to be mixed in the lard blob, supposed to make it look like butter. YUCK! I do remember the movie matinee for just 25 cents. It was safe for kids to go to the movies without an adult. Kids also knew they better behave cause Mom and Dad would hear about any misbehavior even before the kid got home. I did have lots of fun as a child. However though I like the fond memories, I also REALLY like the modern advantages we have today. Heh I never would have met this wonderful group if not for the great cyber-age. This nostalgia really is fun. I still want to know the fate and location of the L.A. PINK FLAMINGOS Good night everyone! Juanita CG for George 74/71/64
