Benadryl, aside from being an antihistamine, is an anticholinergic
(blocks nerve transmission across certain synapses which are
relatively unopposed in cases of PD).  It is in the same family as
Artane and Cogentin, drugs which were used to treat PD before the
advent of L-DOPA.

The side-effects of Benadryl (generic name is Diphenhydramine) are
those of most of the anticholinergics; i.e., sleepiness, dry mouth,
occasional blurring of vision, and occasional problems with bladder
function in men who have prostate problems.
