Hi Deborah

Acting on the advice of our "resident list-dietitian" Kathrynne Holden, I
have tried to do this on a do-it-yourself basis for Peter.
In reading labels I look at the protein/carb content, and add carb as
needed to balance. I don't always do this with great exactitude, but try
in general to get pretty close to the 7:1 ratio. For example, when giving
him Ensure, which has 9 grams protein and less carb than needed, I add
fruit, bread, pudding, etc. for balance. It is easier to figure this when
using commercial foods that have nutrition labels, of course. Frozen meals
are easy, and an entree can be supplemented with food "from scratch" to
make up what's needed. (Then of course he has to EAT it all ! )
Don't forget the importance of spacing food and meds, too. We are told
that Sinemet should be given at least 1/2 hr. BEFORE a meal OR 1-2 hrs.
after, so that the empty stomach will let the meds reach the small
intestine sooner (where they are absorbed) and the protein in the food will
not compete with the meds for dopamine receptors in the intestine.
Unfortunately we have learned that most neuros don't mention this, and
Sinemet bottles may be labeled "Take with food", because some PWPs
experience nausea with it. If nausea is a persistent problem, often some
crackers help, or neuros can suggest a med to counteract it. (Is that
Lodosin?????I'm not sure of the name.)
