Don, i believe that we lose our grip when we momentarily forget we
are holding something - and, we cannot catch it with our slow
response.

i usually put my little finger below the glass or cup to stop
dropping whatever i hold.

i believe our feedback nerves connections do not work as they once
did. certainly not as fast.
