My rule of thumb has been:  if there is fever, there is infection and the
person w/fever should not go to public or private event and expose those
present or have miserable time when rest, fever reducer and fluids are
needed.

Hilary,
If your daughter has the flu.....she is contagious....it is viral origin.
You are risking exposing everyone at the family event..............and if
any
of the persons present are immune suppressed (cancer treatment in progress,
or other major medical problems) you are also possibly risking their lives.
 In most areas of the country, the current flu vaccine is not available and
people have not been able to have the immunization at this time.
