I live on what remains of a family farm.
I am not a farmer.
Many of my friends are farmers.
Many have college or trade school education.
They know what is going on...but, economic pressures are
incredible. To survive as a farmer/small business owner,
it is necessary to optimize in any way possible.
research is ongoing in this area.
(Resistance is Futile)

Lately this trend has been leading towards larger farms,
more chemicals, larger equipment, monoculture manufacturing,
huge debt cycles, corporate farms.
All these strategies -- increase the number of acres
one person can manage, in order to make a wage that
the rest of us take for granted.

That said, in the spring I look to the West--out my back window--
and see Roundup Ready soybeans, covering the edge of the abyss.
A crop sprayer pays regular visits, timing is crucual.
It is so convenient.
If the soil is wet from rain, then the chemicals are
applied by air. Thousands of acres can be done in a day.
No need to plant in rows so that tractors can go through
mechanically cultivating and removing weeds that compete
for nutrients and cut into profits. Too slow. Too much labor.

I don't like it because I'm losing some trees around the edge of
my grove.

I'm saying this to try to make some of you aware how common this is.
It is everyday practice for the majority of our farmers.

I used to culture lymph nodes for chromosome analysis.
It can be a kind of blood disease.
Surgery, radiation, chemo ... you don't want it.
