Calling your doctor concerning this advice is a good idea. That said, it is best to not adhere to the '8 glasses of water rule' in some cases. A Urologist I know was furious that his patient had to be admitted to the hospital because her daughters insisted that she drink 8 glasses of water every day. The consequence was that she went into severe electrolyte imbalance. Patients with congestive heart failure and kidney disorders can become very ill if they consume too much water. There have been cases where folks have died because they consumed large quantities of water, thus washing out the electrolytes that sustain life. My Urologist friend cautioned that the body regulates water intake through thirst - one should drink water (or other liquids) when thirsty. Forcing fluids when one is not thirsty can lead to problems in some patients. ----- God bless Mary Ann
