Bruce, I use rubbing alcohol. I take out the ball & clean it. I take a q-tip and clean the rollers that the ball makes contact with. Those rollers are the parts that really get a build up. I've been cleaning my mouse this way for at least ten years. I don't give my mouse a proper burial until it dies for good. Those new ones from Microsoft have no moving parts, using a beam of light.
