Hello all, There are reasons to think President-elect Bush could be persuaded to support federally funded embryonic stem (ES) cell research, and reasons to think he may discontinue it by executive order. For: 1. He has made strong statements in favor of doubling the NIH budget and supporting medical research to cure numerous serious diseases. 2. The exceptions he allows for abortion (rape, incest, life of the mother) are consistent with reasons for supporting ES research. Against: 1. The statements released to date by Bush people oppose ES cell research. 2. I'd guess that Bush, who is not a detail person, has not examined the issues in detail, and that the info on which he bases a decision will be filtered by advisors. These are tense times.
