Dear Katie and Tarzan---fortunately the Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen regimen
seems to be keeping our guy fairly comfortable. He mainly hurts when
changing position, and is as ambulatory as before. Mimi still finds time
to sleep next to him on the big bed, but does object to HIS needing HER
fuzzy blanket for his naps.......and as he is still able to greet her in
the AM with a treat, things are cool.
.
The problem with opiates seems to be that they can block the dopamine
receptors so the PD meds are not available. This happened to Peter once
after surgery, when he was given Percocet, I failed to catch the chemical
names , and he got really really OFF. When I realized what had
happened, stopped the Percocet and gave him Sinemet, he came back quickly.
And when I later mentioned this to the surgeon, his response was, "But I
don't know anything about meds--I'm a SURGEON ! " Duh!
I should add that there have been some PWPS who have had no problem with
Percocet--so like everything else with PD, "it depends"--but be aware of
this possibility.
I hope you do know that if you are on Eldepryl, you must not have Demerol?
That interaction CAN be fatal !

Time to get lunch --take care.

>Camilla, I am sorry about Peter's injury. It must have been a difficult time
>for both of you. I hope he heals quickly. (And, Tarzan wants to know how
>Mimi is coping as well). I have a question, why are opiates and narcotics
>bad for people with PD? I have seen that before, but I don't know why.
>Katie
