Walk for Life participants vow to end fetal tissue research
Jan. 21, 2001 | 7:19 p.m.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Anti-abortion activists gathered for the annual
Walk for Life vowed to ban the use of fetal tissue in research.
About 2,000 people rallied at the state Capitol on Saturday. This year,
they aimed at supporting Legislative Bill 462, which would ban the use
of fetal tissue from aborted fetuses.
Nebraska Right to Life, which organizes the annual walk, opposes
research involving embryos or aborted fetuses. The research became
controversial after it became publicly known that fetal tissue obtained
from abortions was used in research at the University of Nebraska
Medical Center in Omaha. A similar bill failed last year.
A group called Nebraskans for Research said a legislative ban on fetal
tissue research would achieve very little while sacrificing important
research into neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's
and multiple sclerosis.
``Not a single unborn child will be saved by its enactment,'' the group
said in a news release. ``Instead, a promising search for cures will be
delayed significantly, prolonging the suffering of millions of people.''
