Hi Bruce and Jack and Bob and Janet and Hi y'all...

Bruce, I run PC-Cillin 2000 in Real-Time (that means it scans every file
your computer loads BEFORE it lets you open 'em) and I have an older
PC 486 running Windows 95 and like Bob says - it slows things down a
bit but it is very worthwhile.

Like Jack and Bob, I recommend you get an antivirus software package
and set it up to scan in real-time. For those inclined to FREE...

InoculateIT Personal Edition - Computer Associates. ... Full Featured Antivirus
software for Windows -Virus protection software available for free download with
registration required. This unique offer includes FREE software updates,
FREE virus signature updates, and FREE online support.

I think most people are not savvy enough, nor lucky enough, to get by forever
without an antivirus program. I know I got burned when I shoulda known better!
Now when I was running Win 3.1 and Pegasus and Opera on a 386 I thought I was
relatively safe! As soon as I upgraded to Win 95 .... look out Nellie!

Like Janet, I recommend you consider an e-mail software other than microsoft
Outlook Express.

Like Dr. Bob (and we may be the only 2 on the List) I use the free Pegasus e-mail
program and I love it.
Pegasus Mail ... Welcome to the North American Web Site for Pegasus Mail, the
Internet's longest-serving PC e-mail system, and for the Mercury Mail Transport
System, our comprehensive range of Internet Mail Server products. Pegasus Mail
and Mercury are free products, dedicated to serving all who need them.. Free mail
client for Novell and Winsock TCP/IP by David Harris.

Like Janet I use Opera (as opposed to microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape) as my
default wwweb browser. It's FREE!

In addition to Janet's admonition do not open e-mail attachments, I might add do not
send anything but plain text. It's a little awkward for some because their e-mail
defaults to rich text or HTML etc. but it is possible in every case to reset the
software to plain text only, even in Outlook Express and AOL...

Pegasus allows you to read html messages in plain text if you so choose BTW.

I also have a software firewall and the one I use and prefer, called Zone Alarm is
available free to home users and nonprofit organizations as a download at.....

Creates a free firewall program for Windows 95 or higher so that nobody can get into
your PC. Free...

Steve Gibson has utility programs that allow you to test your firewall.
ShieldsUp and LeakTest are available FREE at....

Steve Gibson I have known for about 15 years and I would recommend you visit his
site and pay attention to what he says. He knows what he is talkin' about and you
can subscribe to his FREE e-mail....

And while I'm on the bandwagon beatin' the FREE drums.....
let me recommend the About folks and their free web sites and free e-mail guides you
can get by FREE subscription....
