Former European boxing champion Tibeiro Mitri dead at 74

ROME (AP) - Tiberio Mitri, a former European middleweight boxing
champion who unsuccessfully challenged Jake La Motta for the world
title, died Monday when he was struck by a train. He was 74. Mitri, one of
Italy's most popular post-war athletes, was walking on the tracks just
outside Rome and ignored the passenger train's alarm, police spokesman
Gaudenzo Truzzi said.
After his glory years, Mitri fell on hard times. He was living in poverty in a
tiny apartment, and he had Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
