The Honorable John Edward Porter and Eugene Garfield, Ph.D., are the newest additions to the board of directors of Research!America, the nation's leading nonpartisan voice for making medical and health research a higher national priority. The Hon. John Edward Porter retired in January after two decades of public service in the United States Congress. For six years, Congressman Porter served as the leading voice of medical and health research advocacy in the House of Representatives, as chair of the Subcommittee for Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies. Congressman Porter's strong support of increasing medical and health research funding helped to bring about historic increases in the fiscal year 1999, 2000 and 2001 budgets of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Congressman Porter recently became partner in the Washington D.C.-based law firm of Hogan & Hartson. Research!America Chair Paul G. Rogers noted, "Congressman Porter's strong record of advocacy for medical and health research has proven invaluable. His leadership as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and now as a Research!America board member will strengthen Research!America's ability to ensure that medical and health research becomes a higher national priority." Eugene Garfield, Ph.D., president of The Eugene Garfield Foundation is also president and editor-in-chief of The Scientist. Founded by Garfield in 1986, The Scientist is a bi-weekly news journal for life scientists (http://www.thescientist.com/). Garfield, whose career is marked by extraordinary developments in new information tools for researchers, is also a futurist who, in the mid-1970's, stated the need to focus heavily on preventive medicine and health services research and suggested that "research funds should be some imperative percentage of the nation's health budget." Research!America President Mary Woolley applauds the addition of such strong advocacy heroes to the board of directors, saying, "Dr. Garfield's lifetime commitment to medical and health research is a model for advocates all across the country. His dedication to the issues and his presence on the board, like that of Congressman Porter, will prove to be an incredible asset."
