Yes, sign the petition.  Then, do something that has even more impact: write
(by hand, if possible) an old-fashioned snail mail on personal stationery in
your own words, telling your own story.  State clearly in the first paragraph
what you want him to do (or, in this case, not do).  Don't exceed one page.  
Elected officials take letters like this more seriously than petitions (which
they know are often signed without much thought).
