Dear Billie,
With regard to food and diet for your brother-in-law, that will depend
somewhat on his stage of Parkinson -- early, middle, or later -- and
what medications he takes; also, upon his personal condition and needs.
In the early and middle stages of PD, it is important to focus on
keeping the bones strong; people with PD sometimes fall, especially in
the later stages, and keeping the bones strong and healthy can help
prevent fractures later. If his beliefs and personal tastes permit it,
yogurt, milk, cheese, lassi are all rich in calcium; and legumes and
dals are rich in magnesium. Both calcium and magnesium are needed for
bone health. Getting out in the sunlight for a few minutes each day will
provide vitamin D, which is also necessary.

If there is nausea from PD medications, ginger may help -- ginger tea,
or a piece of crystallized ginger often helps control nausea.

If your brother-in-law has constipation, it will be helpful to eat
plenty of legumes and pulses, as these are high in fiber; also
vegetables and fruits; and whole grains rather than processed, such as
whole-wheat chapatis and puris, rather than those made with white flour;
brown rice rather than white.

If he is using a levodopa preparation (madopar, sinemet, larodopa), he
should take the levodopa at least one-half hour before eating his meal,
because protein from the meal (in pulses, meat, fish, eggs, yogurt,
cheese) will block the levodopa from being absorbed. Taking the levodopa
well before eating will ensure that it can reach the brain and provide
help without interference from protein in the meal.

Your questions regarding surgeries and medications can be best answered
by others on this list; but if you have other questions regarding diet,
I will try to help.

My very best regards,
Kathrynne
