Apomorphine is used for many years in many countries in Europe. The drug is
available and not experimental in Europe.
It is being used for two reasons:
1. by some neurologists it is used as a diagnostic tool. A positive
response of the drug on the symptoms of PD is in favor of the diagnosis of
idiopathic Parkinso'n's disease.
2. In later stage disease it is used to acutely treat freezing episodes.

It can only be given subcutanouesly using a needle. It has side effects just
like one sees with levodopa and the duration of the response is very short.
Only by using a apomorphine pump one can obtain longlasting effect, but
dyskinesias will not subside. It will eventually cause skin problems as
well.
In countries where DBS is not available or only limited to a small number,
it is frequently used (England, The Netherlands).
