CIHR press conference re guidelines pertaining to human and
embryonic stem cell research

CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) held a press
conference on THURSDAY, MARCH 29 AT 10:30 A.M. EST
for the purpose of announcing their 7 draft recommendations
pertaining to guidelines for human and embryonic stem cell
research in Canada.

These recommendations were posted simultaneously on
CIHR's website ( http://www.cihr.ca ). Over the last
several months, a working group convened by CIHR,
consisting of scientists, researchers, ethicists, and a lawyer
has implemented their mandate to draft guidelines for CIHR
funding in the area of human stem cell research.

The recommended guidelines will be released next Thursday.
This will be followed by web-based consultation across Canada.
The working group will then reconvene to discuss the feedback
and revise guidelines as needed.

The guidelines will then go to the Standing Committee on Health
and will eventually become federal legislation.
