To all newcomers to the PARKINSN list: The bar room brawl which you saw on April 11 is the exception to our conduct, not the rule. Stick around. You'll be glad you did. To everybody: If I may, please let me suggest a couple of old rules of etiquette which help make my life simpler when I (1) remember them and (2) muster up the self discipline to apply them. You probably know them already. FIRST: Praise in public. Criticize in private. I can attest to this. I've been criticized -- rightfully -- both in public and in private. Private works better. SECOND: (The 24-hour rule) If you are moved to write a critical letter (or e-mail) to somebody, wait 24 hours before sending it. Many times the letter looks a lot different (i.e. more embarrassing to the writer than the recipient) after 24 hours. If you still feel the need to send the letter after 24 hours, you might just have a point, so let 'er rip. Now that I've posted these, everybody can start placing bets on (1) the date I will break one or both of these rules and (2) whether or not I will be the first to do so. If that happens, don't hesitate to throw this back in my face.
