It's not "methyl ether", but rather diethyl ether (big difference).  Before
about 1950, almost all general anesthetics were given with diethyl
ether, and so, virtually anyone who had surgery during that time
would have had exposure to it.

Actually, diethyl ether is still one of the safest anesthetic agents
around, but it has other downsides, one of which, for example, being
the fact that it is highly inflammable.
