What I have read about Parkinson dogs is that they also help with freezing by stepping on the persons foot. I also saw a segment on television about the dogs. I have been training dogs for sport and competition for over 20 yrs and have started my current dog on something similiar for the future. I am really early stages so can begin my dog myself. I am teaching him to retrieve dropped items (cane, etc), respond to hand signals and very quiet verbal commands and to "closer" which brings him right up touching my leg and foot. These are just extensions of his current training for competition, so it is a bit easier for him. I figure that by the time I actually need a service dog, he will be retired and I will have started training another dog. The one thing I would add about getting a dog - I would get or train my own service dog in a minute for anything I might have come up, but it is important to remember that dogs are also a responsibility and many people do not want or can not deal with the added responsibility. I view my dog as a companion first and enjoy the company. If you mother is not a "dog" person, getting her a dog may add more stress to her life - one more thing to have to worry about or take care of.
