Hi Paul and Joanne and Good Morning All,
Your discussion inspired me to type doctor balch in my favorite
search engine....

He (Dr. James F.) is touted as an expert.... (by a healthfood store)
http://www.healingexpress.com/about.asp

He is a urologist and an author/lecturer.... (and lives in Texas)
http://www.questvitamins.com/about/balch.html

He endorses supplements and sells books

Prescription for Nutritional Healing:
A Practical A-Z Reference to Drug-Free Remedies
Using Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & Food Supplements
by James F. Balch, Phyllis A. Balch
Written by a medical doctor and a certified nutritional consultant,
this revised and expanded edition of Prescription for Nutritional
Healing is one of the most complete, up-to-date guides to nutritional,
herbal, and complementary therapies available. Prescription for
Nutritional Healing starts with the premise: "Good nutrition is
the foundation of good health." In the 600 pages that follow, the
authors expand on this concept, explaining how to heal the body,
achieve optimum health, strengthen the immune system, and increase
energy levels using vitamins, minerals, herbs, and dietary food
supplements. Price $15.96
http://www.mpip.org/books/booknutr.html

Dr. James F. Balch may be knowledgeable in the field of nutriional
supplements.... (The operative word is MAY)

Joanne said the Balch's come across ok on the media....
(pssst! Joanne! they're sellin' sumthin'!!)

In a few pages the Balches tell you what supplements to take for
Parkinson's Disease. Do they offer any scientific peer reviewed
reasons why? (I don't think so)

Does that mean we should all buy his 1990 book??? (Idon't think so)

Are they qualified to be your Parkinson's expert? (Read my lips... Nah!)

Dr . Stephen Barrett (Quackwatch) says (in part)
In 1989, AANC listed about 200 "Certified Nutritional Consultants," including
James F. Balch, Jr., M.D., and his wife Phyllis, coauthors of
Prescription for Nutritional Healing, an irresponsible book that
many health-food retailers use to prescribe products for their customers.
http://www.quackwatch.com/04ConsumerEducation/Nonrecorg/aanc.html

So..... C.N.C. or "Certified Nutritional Consultant" is not meaningful?
It appears to be used to "prove" or establish the Balch's credibility.

And... Prescription for Nutritional Healing is an "irresponsible book that
many health-food retailers use to prescribe products for their customers"...

Well, that's the Balch's sliced and diced.... But then, I ask you,
where else can you get a good cure for under 20 bucks?

Don't get me wrong here.... There is an important place for diet
therapy and Parkinson's disease and people with Parkinson's
should certainly be aware of the vital role diet plays in their
general well being.

We must also be informed and wary of jumping on the latest miracle
"health" supplement.

Now what about CoQ10? It is much too expensive for a general
supplement. There were several studies done and as far as
I know, the results did not support prescribing CoQ10 for
Parkinson's. Didn't hurt... Didn't help.... 'spensive....

900 mg. a day? Thats about $250.00 a month.... Yikes!!....

I just read what I have written here and I think this is pretty much
'zactly what Paul already said.....

Cheers ............. murray
