The linked to a foundations course idea seems best but you might also consider -- depending on the group -- a small program that York Faculty of Arts has (or used to, anyway) for students from high school who were admitted with the assumption that they were 'in jeopardy' ... of dropping out. They call the course 'Steps to Arts' and it is 6 credits (like other first year College Courses), content rich with a strong critical skills/writing focus.
