PARKINSON’S DISEASE
1st SOUTHEAST REGIONAL YOUNG PATIENT AND FAMILY 
EDUCATIONAL RETREAT
(room & board and meals are free, but y’all gotta eat grits to git in)

October 5, 6, & 7, 2001 

Hosted By:

University of Southern Mississippi Ocean Springs, MS Gulf Coast Research 
Laboratory Campus (adjacent to the Gulf Island National Seashore) and
American Parkinson Disease Association Information and Referral Centers in 
B’ham,  Memphis,  
New Orleans, & Nashville
Lodging will be provided in the USM dormitories with handicapped facilities 
by request. Bed linens and pillows provided, but bring your own towels, 
washcloths, & soap.
Note: Lodging in local motels or casinos must be paid for individually.

Tentative Schedule:

Friday, October 5: 

1:00 PM:  Registration and check-in. Schedules and maps of area will be 
available. Campus facilities will be open and transportation will be provided 
to local attractions if needed. In addition, a message board, computers with 
I-net access, First Aid station, RN’s and MD’s will be available.

5:00 PM: General Session and Supper served in dining hall

7:00 PM: Bon fire on beach and social/get acquainted session (BYOB)

Saturday, October 6: 

7:00-8:45 AM Breakfast in dining hall

9:00 AM:  Official Welcome J. Grimes, PhD., Director Gulf Coast Research Lab

9:15-10:15 AM:  J. Rao, MD, LSU PD Specialist--Overview of PD and Medications

10:15-11:00 AM:  Break and exercises to music

11:00-12:00 AM:  Anthony Nicholas, MD, UAB PD Specialist--PD Research Review
Note: During the AM sessions, a planned activity for children will be offered 
at the Marine Education Center with graduate students in attendance for 
babysitting

12:00 -2:00 PM: Lunch in dining hall

2:00-4:00 PM: Break--out Sessions

7:00 PM: until----- Fish fry and Informal Dinner/Dance in Dining Hall

Sunday, October 7:

7:00-9:00 AM: Breakfast in dining hall

9:00 AM: General Session in Auditorium and Evaluation with open forum for Q & 
A and suggestions for future programs.

10:00 AM: till sundown--Facilities available, but on your own for meals.

Caregiver concerns; Attorney with disability Q & A; Sexuality and 
relationship; Sharing session for Children of PD patients led by counselor;
Exercise demonstration; Tai Chi and Yoga, Depression, Medication discussion 
with pharmacist;

<<<<<Afternoon activities include: fishing, volleyball, basketball, 
Oceanarium, Shrimp boat trip (handicapped accessible and free to handicapped 
or $7.00 adults & $5.00 children and under 3 yrs. free); schooner trip $20.00 
adults & $10.00 children; research boat trip free for adults and children 16 &
 over; casinos; guided nature walk in Gulf Islands National Sea Shore next 
door to campus; ---free transportation to all attractions.>>>>>
