Fox Foundation Partners with NIH and Private Groups for Research Grants

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (www.michaeljfox.org)
is pleased to announce an unprecedented collaboration with the National
Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, other NIH institutes and
other private Parkinson's organizations to jointly fund a program of up to
$7.4 million in Parkinson's disease research grants.

Applications, which should be submitted directly to the NINDS
(http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/2001/01.05.18/index.html) are due by
July 19, 2001; announcement of grant recipients is anticipated by December
1, 2001.

Like the Foundation's initial "Fast Track" grant awards, this new effort -
"R21 Fast Track Grants for Parkinson's Disease Research" - aims to stimulate
novel, innovative or high-impact approaches relevant to the cure, cause,
prevention or improved treatment of Parkinson's disease research. This
public-private partnership incorporates some of the streamlined elements
contributing to the success of the Foundation's recently completed "Fast
Track" program, including:

* An emphasis on innovative projects - no preliminary data required
* An abbreviated application form - maximum ten-page project narratives
* An accelerated review and award process
* A proven multidisciplinary review committee

Working along with the Foundation and NINDS are several additional
participating organizations:

* National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
 (NIDCD) <http://www.nidcd.nih.gov>
* National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
 (NIEHS) <http://www.niehs.nih.gov/>
* National Institute of Mental Health
 (NIMH) <http://www.nimh.nih.gov/>
* Parkinson's Disease Foundation
 (PDF) <http://www.pdf.org>/>
* The National Parkinson Foundation
 (NPF) <http://www.parkinson.org/index.htm>
* The Parkinson Alliance
 (PA) <http://www.parkinsonalliance.net/>

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research is dedicated to the
fastest possible end to Parkinson's disease. The Foundation has launched a
strategic campaign to accelerate, expand and focus funding for the world's
best research targeting effective treatment and prevention of Parkinson's
disease. This collaborative effort is one example of our commitment to
pursue every avenue available to increase federal funding, as well as
support an aggressive fundraising effort to ensure that this critical battle
is won within the decade.
