Dear Paul, I asked the question about contraindications with lithium --against either Selegiline or any of the Agonists (Permax, Mirapex, Requip --of the pharmacist who is our Honorary Professional Advisor to the Parkinson's Association of WA. Below is his reply. I (Joy) would be asking how long a person has been on lithium too, since I seem to recall it is one of the drugs which can give PD like symptoms if taken over a long period. IMHO, I agree with Andrew, there are much better drugs available to treat depression, although I know that some people with bi-polar disorder manage to do well on lithium. But then there is a big difference between bi-polar disorder and the depression of PD. (Isn't there?) Anyway, here (at last) is what Andrew said: Joy Graham ................ Dear Joy, There is no theoretical interaction between lithium and these drugs. Of course, I would worry when the lithium was started - did the person have mood disorder before the advent of PD or vice versa? As you know, PD does funny things to lots of different chemicals in the brain. Levodopa and the dopamine agonists usually have a positive effect on mood. If someone develops depression after diagnosis then we traditionally rely on antidepressants (SSRIs) now such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, and the most preferred in my book - sertraline. Psychotic episodes, hallucinations and vivid dreams suggest over-treatment. Lithium is such a nasty drug with some pretty serious side effects. I wouldn't take it! Hope these comments are useful.
