misfit?
or
misperception?

for lil

your posts always make me think

i may not respond to each one but be assured
my neurons spin a lil faster after reading every lil message!

i believe that the concept of mis fit is a mis perception

fit is a judgment call
what may appear to fit today
may not appear to fit tomorrow
depending on how tinted or scrubbed or crazed our lenses are

this medium can be seen as a miracle in potential communication
if that is what we crave

this medium can be seen as a spiderweb of hate and fear
if that is what we dread

any one thing can be seen as having any attributes
which we want need or fear to attach to it

the internet (just 30 yrs old) and the world wide web (just 10 yrs old)
enable fast communication on a vast scale
which can be used to foster
tolerance or intolerance
truth or illusion
love or hate

much like a city park
can enable personal interaction on a municipal scale
which can be used to foster
leisure games concerts
among residents
or
stalking drug dealing mugging
against residents

cyberspace offers unprecedented anonymity in communication
which can be used to share ideas emotions and information without
racial, religious, disability, lifestyle, and economic 'factors' getting in
the way
or
which can be used to deceive, manipulate, promote, and misconstrue without
any apparent consequences or responsibility

we are in the throes of a global communications revolution
we are the pioneers
we are learning as we go

the first flush of (possibly naive?) excitement (for me, at least)
has been dampened by the cold shock of others' priorities and perceptions
and subsequent actions

but i would never walk into central park (say)
and sit down on a bench donated by columbia university (say)
and lay my emotional self bare to a stranger
who simply happens to wear a nametag which declares
"hi i'm joe and i have pd"

would i?
would you?

in the same way i would never
leave my grandson in the care of a stranger
who simply happens to wear a nametag which declares
"hi, i'm joe and i am a babysitter"

would i?
would you?

the brilliance of the bona fide potential miracle is still there
we just need to remember to brandish our raybans
in order to banish potential bedazzlement
