Events aim to combat Parkinson’s Family Day, golf outing aim to raise funds and educate June 5, 2001 - PEORIA - Several upcoming events are aimed at educating people about Parkinson’s disease and raising money to combat it. Joan B. Snyder of the Parkinson’s Alliance has organized a golf outing at Donovan Golf Course and a Family Day at Three Sisters Park, just south of Chillicothe, on July 7. A medical symposium that aims to educate those suffering from Parkinson’s and provide feedback and perspective to research scientists and neurologists is scheduled for July 8. Snyder said U.S. Rep. Lane Evans, D-Rock Island, who also has Parkinson’s, has agreed to attend the golf outing. The Family Day events begin at noon and run until after 8 p.m. Activities include a bocci ball tournament, magician Gordon Snow, storyteller Brian "Fox" Ellis, hot air balloons, wildlife expert Marge Bjorklund, live musical entertainment, food and refreshments. Golfers will arrive at this event after their play is concluded for an awards ceremony. Two-thirds of the profits from the day’s events will be matched by the Tuckman Foundation for Parkinson’s research. One-third of the profits will be directed toward local Parkinson’s research and activities. The organizers are looking for players and sponsors for the golf tournament and other events. More information is available by calling Snyder at 579-3026. The symposium is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria in the lecture hall. The event is free and open to all people with Parkinson’s, their family members and caregivers. Phillip C. Jobe and Richard J. Weber, of the college’s department of biomedical and therapeutic sciences, and other physicians and researchers will exchange ideas with the audience. Sponsored by an Internet support group, People Living with Parkinson’s, the event is the first in a national series of "Patients as Providers" programs. The group’s Web site can be found at www.plwp.org. Snyder, who also has the disease, will receive the national Sidney Dorros Award for her work at a reception from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday (June 9th) at the clubhouse at Shore Acres Park in Chillicothe. The $5,000 prize from the National Parkinson’s Foundation annually recognizes an individual who has done outstanding work in a local Parkinson’s support group. http://www.pjstar.com/news/local/cop314a.html janet paterson: an akinetic rigid subtype, albeit perky, parky . pd: 54/41/37 cd: 54/44/43 tel: 613 256 8340 email: [log in to unmask] . snail mail: 375 Country Street, Apt 301, Almonte, Ontario, Canada, K0A 1A0 . a new voice: the nnnewsletter: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/janet313/ . a new voice: the wwweb site: http://www.geocities.com/janet313/ . ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off Parkinsn send a message to: mailto:[log in to unmask] In the body of the message put: signoff parkinsn
