Govt hopeful of uniform laws banning cloning
The Federal Government hopes to have uniform national
laws banning human cloning in place by June 2002.

The Prime Minister has included the issue on the agenda for the
June Council of Australian Governments meeting (COAG).

Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia all have laws
banning cloning, with New South Wales and Queensland
preparing laws.

John Howard wants a uniform approach.

He will ask the COAG meeting to refer the matter to the Health
Ministers to prepare a report by the end of the year.

The report would consider what cloning activities should be
banned, a regulatory regime and the implications for research.

The Australian Academy of Science has indicated it does not
support the cloning of embryos, but does not want other forms
of cloning banned, such as research using embryonic stem cell
lines.

The academy says the research could lead to treatments for major
degenerative disease, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease
and insulin dependent diabetes.
