AUSTRALIA NSW to support human cloning ban Source: AAP|Published: Monday June 4, 10:11 AM SYDNEY, June 4 AAP - NSW will support the Commonwealth in its move to officially ban human cloning, Premier Bob Carr said today. However the NSW government would also ensure it protected “opportunities for medical research”, he said. Australian health ministers have previously agreed to ban human cloning but only three states have passed laws to implement the ban. Mr Carr said there would be no dissent on the issue when it was raised at Friday's Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting. “I don't think there's any disagreement that we want to prevent human cloning but my emphasis will be protecting the opportunities for medical research,” he told ABC radio. “I'll be finding time to talk to medical researchers this week to look at what they're doing in stem cell research and to look at how that could present us with the opportunity for quite spectacular breakthroughs in diseases,” he said. “The prospect of beating Alzheimer's (disease), of beating cancers is exciting. “We've got to protect the opportunity for that sort of research to be done,” he said. http://www.theage.com.au/breaking/2001/06/04/FFX2LTJ4JNC.html ********** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off Parkinsn send a message to: mailto:[log in to unmask] In the body of the message put: signoff parkinsn
