Carlos asked about exercise for PD if it is SO important..................... Where are all the exercise classes ? Another comment from Anne Rutherford Everyone agrees that exercise is important. So, where are all the exercise classes? In Newfoundland and Labrador there are about 1,200 people with Parkinson's (PWP) and there is just one exercise class! Established in St John's in 1990, the class is still going strong with from 15 to 20 PWP attending each week. The Miller Centre's physiotherapy staff. provide the instructor. Twenty out of 1,200 is nothing to boast about, particularly when the experts say that a regular workout will keep a person with Parkinson's flexible, fit and more able to cope with their symptoms. Just any old exercise won't do. Some exercises are better than others and a routine designed especially for each PWP ensures the best results. Thinking that other cities might be more successful in starting up exercise classes, I did some research. I found out that Mississauga has a population about as large as ours (but in a much smaller area). Mississauga supports two classes. Nova Scotia has a larger population than Newfoundland and has just one class. It looks like we are all in the same boat. When the Miller Centre class became overcrowded a second group in the west end of St John's was suggested. Easy to say hard to do. In the next ‘Soapbox' you will read about the four essentials for an exercise class and we will crunch a few numbers. ~~~~~~~~~~ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign-off Parkinsn send a message to: mailto:[log in to unmask] In the body of the message put: signoff parkinsn
