dream dad

last year
i dreamed of my father
we were standing side by side
watching the earth-moving work in the harbour down below
as i leaned into him
his arm tight around my waist
we shared the thought that he had never been able
to express affection physically
he had never
hugged
me
i had never
been hugged
by him
i teased him with
well it's about time dad
he acknowledged that smiling
and then held me even more snugly
we stood there side by side comfortable at last
watching the on-going renewal
more tears on awakening
but tears of joy
this time
