"Dream Team" Hosts
"Links for a Cure" Golf Outing
To Fund Parkinson's Disease Research

People don't usually associate Parkinson's Disease with a good time, but
if Joan Snyder has anything to say about it, that will soon change.

On Saturday, July 7, Snyder and the group of dedicated volunteers she
calls her "dream team" will host a golf outing dubbed "Links for a Cure"
along with a Family Fun Day that will appeal to fun-seekers of all ages
while raising funds for Parkinson's research.

Registered golfers will kick off the day at Donovan Golf Course with a
continental breakfast at 8 a.m., followed by tee-off at 9. Opportunities
for sponsorship are still available for a limited time, and golfers
wishing to register can do so at the golf course or by calling Snyder at
(309) 579-3026.

When they've completed the course, the golfers will re-assemble at Three
Sisters Park in Chillicothe, where gates will open at 11:30 a.m., for
the Fun Day. Among the activities slated there are a bocce ball
tournament, performances by magician Gordon Snow and storyteller Brian
"Fox" Ellis, face painting, appearances by wildlife expert Marge
Bjorklund and balloon artist Doug Smith, an auction, door prizes, live
music by the Millennium Big Band, Patrick Hazell, and Sally Weisenburg
and the Famous Sidemen, and plenty of food and drink.

Also on display will be a reprise of "Letting Go", an exhibit of
paintings and photographs by Jane Scott and Marc Esser chronicling
Scott's father's battle with Parkinson's Disease.

Two-thirds of the proceeds from the day's events will be matched by the
Tuchman Foundation, a private foundation dedicated to finding a cure
for Parkinson's disease, before being sent on to the Parkinson's
Alliance for use in research. The remainder of the money will remain in
the Peoria community to aid local researchers in their efforts to combat
the devastating disease.

"I am overwhelmed by people's generosity", says Snyder, who has battled
Parkinson's Disease for over a decade.

"The donations we've gotten range from Methodist Medical Center, which
gave us $10,000.00, to people who have written cheques for five dollars
or donated hand-made items for our raffle.

"Local merchants have given us some fabulous things for door prizes and
the auction - we've received an $800 watch from CEFCU, $300 Maui Jim
sunglasses, and tons of gift certificates.

"John Grisham sent us an autographed copy of his latest book, and a car
is also being offered to the golfer who can hit a hole-in-one on the
14th hole at Donovan Golf Course during the event."

Snyder says she's also humbled by the VIPs from the Parkinson's
community who are planning to attend the event, including Congressman
Lane Evans, Robin Elliott of the Parkinson's Disease Foundation,
Margaret Tuchman of the Tuchman Foundation and the Parkinson Alliance,
Carole Walton of the Alliance, Brenda Tucker and Nancy Abraham, co-
founders of the internet support group, People Living With Parkinson's,
and John Lester of Massachusetts General Hospital.

Local VIPs in attendance will include Rick Weber and Philip Jobe from
the University of Illinois School of Medicine, and Chillicothe mayor,
Don White.

On Sunday, July 8, Parkinson's patients and their families and
caretakers are invited to attend a free symposium at the University of
Illinois College of Medicine Peoria campus, at 2:00 p.m. A panel of
research scientists and physicians will discuss their work and other
work being done in the field of Parkinson's Disease.

The event, which is sponsored by People Living With Parkinson's, is the
first in a national series of "Patients as Providers" programs which
seek to open communication between Parkinson's patients and the research
community.
