Thanks to Robin Elliott of the Parkinson's Disease Foundation for his letter to the New York Times in support of funding embryonic stem cell research. It is appreciated that PD organizations are taking a stand on this controversial issue. As the Los Angeles Times reported yesterday, the American Heart Association reversed their earlier decision to support the research. It noted: "So now, just as President Bush is deciding whether to invest federal money in embryo cell research, the nation's second-largest patient advocacy group has gone silent. In fact, its board voted last October not to fund the very research that it had endorsed only four months earlier as full of promise." "This raises the question whether this makes it easier for Bush to oppose embryo cell research, because he can say the American people are unhappy with it," said Alexander Capron, a professor of law and medicine at USC." Certainly every letter and phone call, every positive action helps. Likekwise, every silence hurts the outcome on stem cell research funding.
