Barb Parkinson's Information Exchange Network (PIEN) or ("Parkinsn List") The Parkinson's Information Exchange Network (PIEN) or ("Parkinsn List") is an open, unmoderated, internet discussion list for people with Parkinson's, their caregivers both personal and professional and anyone with an interest in Parkinson's. The Parkinsn List began on November 9, 1993. There are now about 2000 members from more than 36 countries. The need has been expressed for a reference document containing information about interacting with the Parkinsn List. This is that document. Barbara Patterson, List Owner ([log in to unmask]) 1. Preface This charter of the Parkinson's Information Exchange Network (PIEN) or ("Parkinsn List") contains important policies and terms and conditions of participation. People requesting to be subscribed to Parkinsn are informed of the existence of the charter and how to access it at: http://parkinsons-information-exchange-network-online.com/parkinsn.html or to obtain a printable text copy at: http://parkinsons-information-exchange-network-online.com/parkinsn.txt Periodically, the Parkinsn Charter will posted as a message to Parkinsn. By virtue of subscribing to PIEN, a person states that he or she has read and understands the charter and agrees to the terms and conditions contained in it. The terms and conditions for participation may be changed by the List owner solely at her discretion after notifying current subscribers of the proposed change and providing them with sufficient opportunity (48 hours) to un-subscribe from Parkinsn before the change is adopted. Terms PIEN = Parkinson's Information Exchange Network "List" = Parkinsn email list which is a part of Parkinson's Information Exchange Network. List Owner= Barbara Patterson and/or her designees. Moderator = Barbara Patterson and/or her designees. Subscription = The process of interacting with the listserv in order to receive posting privileges on the Parkinsn email list. Review = a subscription option that requires messages to be approved by a List owner or moderator prior to being posted to Parkinsn Parkinsn Charter = This document which may also be known as Parkinsn Guidelines. 2. Purposes of Parkinsn The purpose of the Parkinson's Information Exchange Network(PIEN) or ("Parkinsn List") is to provide a forum for people with an interest in Parkinson's Disease to exchange information and experiences in a supportive and positive environment. The discussion on the list varies from people sharing their own experiences of orthodox and alternative treatments to people discussing the emotional and social aspects of Parkinson's. It is also the purpose of Parkinsn to maintain a repository of the information shared on Parkinsn, so that this collective information is available to inform and assist future, as well as current, List subscribers. 3. Responsibilities of List Owner and Subscribers a) The List owner is responsible for the management and administration of the Parkinson's Information Exchange Network (PIEN) or ("Parkinsn List"), which includes approving subscription requests, monitoring Parkinsn for adherence to List policies, maintaining Parkinsn archives, and maintaining Parkinsn Web site (P-I-E-N-O). The List owners are those people designated in the Listserv header for Parkinsn. The List owners may remove any designees upon his or her request, or for violating Parkinsn policies or for inactivity. Any person so removed relinquishes any claims of ownership and any presumed rights thereof. ** Important policies regarding the direction, purposes, and administration of Parkinsn may be discussed on Parkinsn; however, the List owner is ultimately responsible for establishing List policies. B) Subscribers are responsible for conducting themselves in accordance with the policies contained in this Charter or Guidelines. Parkinsn membership is multi-national, multi-cultural and multi-denominational; therefore, Parkinsn is not the forum for promoting or criticizing ethnicity or religion. Since we are a multi-national community, care has to be taken so as not offend the sensibilities of multi-ethnic members. Off-color postings and comments damage our cohesiveness. Subscribers are free to discuss ideas, but disparaging remarks directedtoward those who adhere to different viewpoints are not acceptable. Keeping the spirit of loving, caring and respecting one another in the forefront in Parkinsn List discussions and the focus balanced with those ideals in mind is an important goal. Humor and creative expression are appreciated but are not the main focus of Parkinsn. Other forums are available which better specialize in these kinds of postings. Those which reflect and/or express the realities of living with Parkinson's either as a person with Parkinson's (pwp) or a caregiver are always welcome on Parkinsn. Organizations are free to use our hospitality to announce events that are of interest to our community once they have identified themselves to the list owner. New members who introduce themselves or pose questions should be made to feel welcome and receive a response to their questions and concerns. 4. Subscription Criteria Parkinsn is open to all people with a legitimate, non-commercial interest in Parkinson's who wish to exchange information and experiences with other subscribers. Professionals involved in the treatment of, or day-to-day living, with Parkinson's are welcome; researchers studying Parkinson's are also welcome as long as they do not conduct any research using the Parkinsn list members or their messages without their informed consent. Subscriptions are not accepted from those interested only in promoting commercial products or services of any kind. The decision to subscribe an individual to Parkinsn is solely that of the List owner. Mail management is the responsibility of the subscriber. One can either use the instructions in the Welcome Letter or use the simplified mail management options at: http://parkinsons-information-exchange-network-online.com/mailopt.html 5. Moderation Messages to Parkinsn are not moderated, that is, not reviewed by the List owner prior to being posted. Parkinsn is "moderated" primarily by the subscribers themselves, who have demonstrated uncommon courtesy, good sense, and mutual respect throughout the history of Parkinsn. Subscribers are expected to help maintain the co-operative and supportive nature of Parkinsn and to adhere to Parkinsn posting guidelines. Any question about a subscriber's behaviour on Parkinsn will be handled by a List owner in private whenever possible. Repeated failure to adhere to Parkinsn policies or posted guidelines may result in a subscription being set to REVIEW, a subscription option that requires messages to be approved by a List owner or moderator prior to being posted to Parkinsn. The interpretation of adherence to Parkinsn policies and acceptable behaviour on Parkinsn is solely the determination of the List owner. No subscriber will be placed on REVIEW or removed from Parkinsn without first being notified of the behaviour or actions considered unacceptable and given the opportunity to correct the problem. The exception to this is if a subscriber's actions are so egregiously offensive or sothreatening to Parkinsn that immediate action must be taken. Private communications among subscribers are not the responsibility of the List owner. Subscribers should be aware that other subscribers may obtain their e-mail addresses from messages posted to Parkinsn and that they may receive unsolicited private e-mails from other subscribers. Subscribers are normally expected to deal with such e-mails themselves, as they would any other private e-mail. A subscriber may be removed from Parkinsn for harassing, threatening, flaming, or spamming other List subscribers in private communications, but solely at the discretion of the List owner. Public posting of communications you have received privately are a breach of netiquette' without prior approval of the author. Strictly personal posts among members should be conducted off-list unless the content is of interest to most members. Communications posted to the Parkinsn list are not private but are publicly available on our website and also in the archives. Usage of this information is intended for research and study. Other uses without thepermission of the poster are prohibited. 6. List Archives Parkinsn is configured to archive messages in a searchable database. Over time, thousands of people join Parkinsn and have access to Parkinsn archives and, thereby, have access to the names and e-mail addresses of anyone who has posted to Parkinsn, as well as any personal information contained in the messages. It should be further understood that while subscribers are added to Parkinsn by a List owner, the List owner does not verify the identity or representations of people wishing to subscribe. The List owner cannot shield a subscriber from any misuse of information readily available to any subscriber nor from the misconduct of any subscriber. Access to the list of current subscribers is restricted to the List owner. The list of subscribers will not be provided to any person or entity for any commercial uses, but may be provided to a person or entity for non-commercial uses at the discretion of the List owner or as may be required by law.
