The ads, which are running on national and Washington cable programs and in key print news publications, feature Samantha, an 11-year-old with juvenile diabetes. Scientists believe embryonic stem cell research holds exceptional promise for cures for diseases like Samantha's, as well as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, cancer, heart disease, spinal cord injuries and others. The ads are aimed at increasing public awareness that embryonic stem cell research is not simply a scientific or a political issue, but an issue of human suffering and of great hope among an estimated 100 million American patients. The campaign reflects nationwide opinion surveys by several news organizations that show strong, widespread support for the research, including among Catholics, fundamentalist Christians and abortion opponents. President Bush is expected to decide any day whether to continue federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, under specific guidelines established last year by the National Institutes for Health. JDRF, the world's leading nonprofit, nongovernmental funder of diabetes research, was founded in 1970 by the parents of children with juvenile diabetes -- a disease which strikes children suddenly, makes them insulin dependent for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. Since inception, JDRF has provided more than $410 million to diabetes research worldwide. In 2001 alone, the Foundation will spend $120 million and 85 cents of every dollar goes directly to research and education about research. JDRF's mission is constant: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. For more information, visit the website at http://www.jdrf.org , or call 800-533-CURE.
