The Toronto Star Jul. 9, 2001. 01:30 AM Trashing embryos even worse Re An alternative exists to embryonic stem cell research, Letter, July 6. In her letter, Jakki Jeffs, executive director of Alliance for Life Ontario, argues that using human embryos to retrieve stem cells for treatment of diseases is not acceptable because it means the destruction of what some perceive as an already existing human being. Putting aside the age-old debate of when life actually begins, an argument that can easily be debated to many different stages, Jeffs seems not to be taking into account the fact that thousands of these embryos are discarded, or in her estimation, killed, each year. After approximately three years, these embryos are no longer considered a successful candidate for implantation and many people don't, and won't, ever use their frozen embryos, which all results in the discarding and subsequent death of these potentially life-saving cells. What could possibly be more morally wrong than simply discarding these embryos that might give hope and a cure to other living human beings with established lives? Jamie L.
