I think permitting self medication depends very much on
local rules and customs.and the senior MD's attitude.

 I have personal experience----

I was in the Toronto Hospital for a pallidotomy in 1996. A short
time and I was fully functional.
I had my drug regime printed out by my computer. That
pleased the staff
I was allowed to self medicate but the nurses came by
to check on me ---- and to ask if I had taken the pills.
