Half in poll support stem cell research
July 12, 2001

Half of Chicago area residents say stem cell research involving
human embryos is ethical, according to a CBS-2/Chicago Sun-Times
poll conducted Wednesday.

The survey of 500 Chicago area residents shows 50 percent of
respondents said they had no ethical problems with stem cell
research, while 24 percent said it was unethical and 16 percent
are not sure whether it is ethical.

A major issue facing President Bush is whether to approve
federal funding of stem cell research that uses human embryos
for medical research to fight a variety of diseases.

Respondents to the poll were just as divided over whether
the federal government should pay for stem cell research.
Forty-six percent said the government should pay,
and 43 percent said the government should not pay.

The survey was conducted by Survey USA and has a margin
of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
