Well-- it could have been worse, from whatever way you look at it.  Bush
seems to have found, as one reporter put it, "some wiggle room" that allows
a limited use of *existing* cell lines, with federal funding.    It was
pointed out afterwards  that when private companies create new cell lines,
they may eventually be eligible for federal funds also--that is where the
present lines came from, apparently.

Those who feel that the extraction of cells from the blastulas is
destroying human life may take some comfort in his allowing funds only for
research on existing lines of cells from  blastulas(early embryos) which
have already been destroyed in the process.    And scientists who wanted
unlimited genetic variety in larger number of cell lines will at least have
something to start with.   The appointing of a presidential commission to
explore further ramifications of  such research, is also a good move, I
think.   Its effectiveness will, of course, depend on who the appointees
are.

In the end, after all, it could have been worse........
