What W ended up doing is precisely what William Safire proposed in an op ed piece in the NYTimes some weeks back. Safire is head of the Dana Foundation, which is committed to funding work that builds on and furthers understanding of the brain... and his Republican credentials are such that his opinion must have carried considerable weight. (He's smart and funny and kind, too.) Though "Republican" and "mensch" aren't often uttered in the same breath, let alone in reference to the same person, this may be a good time to do that.
