Bob - I'm a firm believer in the Scriptural warning "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Most suffering, fighting, division, etc., is due to ignorance of people, thoughts, ideas and concepts. That's why I believe education is the tool. If people can be educated as to the issues, they'll respond intelligently and in a way that leads to the enhancement of life. It all boils down to a matter of helping us grow in our understanding of life and its issues. Anyway, thanks for writing, and welcome back to your family from their overseas Sabbatical. Sunday night my daughter and son-law just returned from a 10 week sabbatical in Greece and Scotland. Part of their trip included a seminar/retreat covering ethics and morality. My son-in-law is the clergyman and my daughter the social worker. After reading my last two letters to the editor Sunday night, my daughter Laura, raised the very issue of placing the pursuit of bodily healing ahead of spiritual well being. I was really taken back by the discussion which we of course didn't finish. Laura has been supportive of our advocacy for stem cell and fetal cell research, and made the trip to Washington with Nancy and me. She has been reserved in her support and until Sunday night I could not figure out why. Your letter today made it quite clear why she has been reserved. Unlike Dr. Fink who believes the issue is a beginning of life issue, in my family the issue also addresses the issue of placing our physical needs too far ahead of the nurturing of our soul. I suspect that many of us may be tested in this way. Unfortunately few of us possess the ability/training to raise the issue the way you did nor the skill to really respond to it.
