Yes, yes... As an American living in Canada, I am deeply touched by this
violence and all too conscious of the policies which contribute to the
desperation of oppressed peoples within and without the US.
I hope, with that Muslim woman on the street, here in Toronto, and
elsewhere, that we can muster the courage to use this tragedy to heal and to
struggle for peaceful solutions to intransigent differences.
The specter of reactive and revenge policies lurks behind the media images
and around every corner.

While there's no doubt that this was indeed a tragic event, I keep thinking
that it was only *one* event . . . and people in many parts of the world
live with terrorism every day of their lives. One aftermath of Tuesday's
tragedy is, unfortunately, a huge upswelling here of what I can only call
arrogant patriotism -- as if death is somehow worse if it's American . . .
