This letter appeared in today's Globe and Mail. It draws on an article in yesterday's paper, but explains that context well enough. I think the connection it makes between the "belief" of terrorists and the rhetoric of Bush is quite chilling. Rob Irish PRINT EDITION The Aftermath Comment Good and evil By CHRISTOPHER TAYLOR Friday, September 14, 2001 – Page A24 Ottawa -- Terrorism expert Mark Juergensmeyer says the terrorists he has met "seemed not only normal but pleasant, affable with above-normal intelligence." What made them different was the fact that "they believed they were part of a titanic struggle between good and evil" (Twisted View Of The World Drives Some To Mass Murder -- Sept. 13). George W. Bush is preparing for war against terrorism and believes "this will be a monumental struggle of good versus evil, but good will prevail." We can only pray that the U.S. President and his advisers will rise above this simplistic view. Otherwise, the cycle of hatred and terror will only expand. -- ********************************* Dr. Robert Irish, Director Language Across the Curriculum Applied Science and Engineering University of Toronto Sandford Fleming B670 416-978-6708 ******************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- To leave the list, send a SIGNOFF CASLL command to [log in to unmask] or, if you experience difficulties, write to Russ Hunt at [log in to unmask] For the list archives and information about the organization, the annual conference, and publications, go to the Inkshed Web site at http://www.StThomasU.ca/inkshed/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
