There are two articles in the current issue of The Scientist (http://www.the-scientist.com/yr2001/sep/index_010917.html) that are of interest to the PD community. Half a Loaf is Not Good Enough, by Arthur L. Caplan. The author, a bioethicist, discusses the inadequacy of using current embryonic stem cell lines for research as per the Bush decision and the inadequacy of the scientific community's response to the decision. Gene Therapy Targets Canavan Disease, by Douglas Steinberg. A method of treatment for this rare neurodegenerative disease is being tested in a clinical trial. Gene therapy against PD may also be tested in a few years.
