The obvious solution is for everyone to use The History of Theatre by Oscar Brockett and Frank Hildy, the 9th edition of which will be out next August. Both the evidence for the evolutionary idea and for the challenges to that idea are presented there -- though admittedly there is an error in the representation of Wickham's arguments in the 8th edition that has been corrected in the 9th.
