NEWS: Researchers wire up rat with brain-cam
A German scientist has fitted a microscope on to the head of a live rat
so he can see how its brain works.

The tiny machine which was specially built for the experiment is so
powerful it can see individual neurons in detail.

It allows researchers to monitor changes in brain cells which occur
during sleep or learning.

Apart from being small enough for the rat to carry on its head,
the microscope also had to compensate for the vibrations of its
movement.

Dampers placed on the system result in a stable image at all times
except during sudden head movements.

The neurons are connected to an optical fibre which also sends
the images to a computer for viewing.

The research was carried out by Professor Winfried Denk of the
Max-Planck-Institute for Medical Research in Germany and is
published in the journal Neuron.
