My late husband received TIAA disability benefits for eight years. The college where he taught helped with the application process and saw to it that everything was in order. The TIAA people were very helpful. He also applied for SSDI and was OK'd with no problem. (This meant that TIAA benefits were reduced.) His most visible symptom was lack of clarity of speech, so anyone listening realized he couldn't teach any more.
