I had good experiences with my attorneys. The attorney who took care of my issues with the disability insurance did not charge me an initial consulting fee. What he did do was make a careful review of my insurance claim and requested complete medical information. He did not make any "big promises" to me about my legal prospects. But instead explained to me that the results of my claim depended on the provisions of the underlying policy, not the information given by my former employer. He charged me about a $100.00/hour (several years ago) after that, but it was always for actual contact (by phone & letter) with the insurance company (that was in another state) from which he provided documentation to me. When I needed assistance with my continuing Request for Reasonable Accommodation (under ADA) with my employer, he told me that he had no expertise there, but gave me names of three other attorneys (not in his firm). I talked to two of them on the phone and chose one of them for an office visit. She charged about $150.00/hour. But it was always for detailed work that she documented. She was experienced in representing both workers and employers in ADA cases, both private and public sector. She emphasized the difficulties of taking these type of cases to court and made sure that I had did everything reasonable on my part, including going to part-time employment (encouraged by my disability insurance policy), before the progression of PD forced me to go to full retirement. When it came time to file for Social Security Disability, I had ample documentation of disability and needed no assistance from an attorney. My claim was approved by SSA six months after I filed it.
